Just look at this historic map showing the British Empire in 1897 (British possessions shown in red).
Not to overlook the very obscure 'Map of Cannibalism' (note how much cannibalism is going on in the Americas).
Going back a little further still is a highly detailed illustrated World map produced in Amsterdam in 1689, which depicts the continents in each spherical plane view of the globe.
